LAKSHADWEEP- EMERALDS OF SOUTH FRONTIER

Embedded in Arabian Sea, west to Kochi, Lakshadweep, literally meaning “one lakh islands”, is an archipelago of 36 islands out of which 10 are inhabited having a total area of 32 sq. kilometers. It consists of 12 atolls, 3 coral reefs and 5 submerged banks. Everything about these islands is mesmerizing, the white sand on the beaches, turquoise water and the picturesque background.

How to reach:

To reach Lakshadweep one must obtain tourist permit, including Indians. However foreign tourist can visit only 3 island viz., Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat whereas Indian can visit all the islands.

By Air:  Agati Airport on Agati Island of Lakshadweep is the easiest way to land to Lakshadweep islands. Island Bangaram and Agatti can be reached by Indian airlines operating from Kochi.

By Water: From Agatti helicopter and ferry services available for Kavaratti and Kadmat islands.

PLACES TO VISIT

  1. Minicoy Island

Locally known as Maliku, it is second largest island amongst all the islands on Lakshadweep. It is best known for its white sand beaches, vibrant coral reefs, limitless ocean and expensive resorts. It is also a romantic getaway to spend time with your loved one an experience nature in its purest form. The best time to enjoy the stay at island is during winters and onset of summer.

2. Agatti Island

Another gem from Lakshadweep group of Island is Agatti Island, known for its mesmerizing beaches and beautiful coral reef. The island is small with 3 sq km but it is indeed a piece of paradise with clear blue water, white sand and blue sky. Every corner of the island is filled with vegetation and scenic beauty.  Also it is the only island from the group that have airport.

3. Kavaratti Island

Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep is situated in the centre of Lakshadweep archipelago. It has warm sandy beached where you can unwind yourself surrounded with beautiful lagoons and countless multi-hued fished, sea cucumber and start fish. The west of the island lagoon is best suited for swimming, kayaking,  wind surfing and canoeing.

4. Bangaram Island

Bangaram encompasses and areas of 1.34 sq km and is the largest island among the group of island and is pocketed in Indian Ocean. There is a wide range of thing you can do here, walk around entire Island, swim with fishes and watch dolphins as they swirl in the oceans and turtles moving in the bed of the beaches. The beach has one resort and only 10 inhabitants, the people working on the resort.
